The Nigerian movie industry known as Nollywood has undoubtedly come a long way. From its early days of producing movies that appeal to only Nigerians, to the present day where they’ve grown to become the most loved and most viewed movie industry in Africa. It has been an intriguing journey.

Every year, Nollywood releases blockbuster movies that keep viewers glued to their screens and this year 2022, is not an exception.

  1. For Maria: Ebun Pataki

This movie tells the story of a woman who is a first-time mum and is suffering from postpartum depression. It brings to the knowledge of the viewers what postpartum depression is and the effects it has on a woman. The movie was released in January 2022, and it was directed by Damilola Orimogunje

 

  1. The Milkmaid

The Milkmaid is a Desmond Ovbiagele’s production which premiered on Amazon Prime in August 2022.

This movie brings to Viewers the effects of terrorism and kidnapping on the lives of people in Northern Nigeria. It revolves around the life of Aisha, a Fulani milkmaid who went in search of her sister Zainab who was kidnapped by religious militants.

The movie was Nigeria’s official entry for the Oscars.

Boma is desperately in need of the attention of her ex-boyfriend to the extent that she tells lies just to get him. One of her lies caused a great tragedy and affected her life and that of the people around her. The movie starred Bisola Aiyeola, Kachi Nnochiri and others

Aníkúlápó is an Epic movie and one of Nollywood’s latest releases. It tells the story of infidelity, love, pride and betrayal. The movie was produced by legendary producer Kunle Afolayan and Jonathan Kovel, it starred the likes of Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale, Kunle Remi, Moji Olayiwola, Aisha Lawal, Mr Macaroni, Dele Odule, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Fathia Balogun, Taiwo Hassan and others.

 

  1. Brotherhood

This movie revolves around the lives of Twin brothers Akin (Tobi Bakre) and Wale (Falz).

They were orphans and after years of struggling for survival in the city of Lagos, Wale joined the Police Force while Akin became a member of a notorious criminal gang in Lagos. Their bonds as brothers were ultimately put to test as Wale’s task force hunts down Akin and his gang members.

 

  1. Blood Sisters

The movie blood sisters revolve around the lives of two friends Sarah and Kemi. Sarah is engaged to her dream man however, their flawless union seems to be an issue along the line. The movie is a 5 star movie directed by Late Biyi Bandele and Kenneth Gyang. It featured; Kate Henshaw, Nancy Isime, Ini Dima-Okojie, Dayemi Okanlawon, Zack Orji, Gabriel Afolayan, Kehinde Bankole and others

This movie tells the story of Samuel who left his rigid religious upbringing in search of a life for himself. It featured Akah Nnani, Osas Ighodaro and others

 

  1. The Blood Covenant

The blood covenant tells a captivating tale of the dangers of greed, peer pressure, money rituals and corruption. The story revolves around the lives of three friends who were pressured by society into getting quick wealth. Tired by the pressures of life they embarked on a quest to chase the bag and get a good life for themselves, they resorted to doing whatever it takes not minding the consequences to achieve these goals.

The movie was written by Chiamaka Osagwu and Chinaza Onuzo and it starred the likes of; Omowunmi Dada, Shawn Faqua, Uzor Arukwe, Ufuoma McDermott, Erica Nlewedim and Alexx Ekubo.

 

  1. The Set Up 2

The movie tells the story of Chika who was trying to find her foot in her new job as an international agent but her plans were cut short abruptly when her friend’s child was kidnapped.

She left behind all the things she held dearly, to go after the Kidnappers. The kidnap was a setup but Chika and her friend Grace were able to outsmart the kidnapper and rescue Grace’s child.

This movie talks about the lives of 3 women living in the same compound who are victims of different kinds of assaults from their partners. One of them, a 24-year-old, decided to speak up and revolt against their oppressors. It featured Damilare Kuku, Toyin Abraham and others.
