The Tecno Pop series may not be one of the most popular Tecno series, but the Tecno Pop 2 which falls in the series, is a product which deserves some attention. The smartphone is low-end device which sells at a pretty affordable price. As long as you do not mind running the Android 8.1 Oreo system, we believe you should take some time to look into the phone. It is however worthwhile stating at the start of this article, that this product has no support for 4G networks.
Appearance and Display
The appearance of the Tecno Pop 2 is just like that of a typical low-end device. Tecno does not always release low-end devices, and we are glad the company decided to produce a low-end device. The product features a plastic body, while having a dimension of about 153.7 x 72.4 x 9.5 mm. This dimension of 153.7 x 72.4 x 9.5 mm, is an equivalent of 5.66 x 2.85 x 0.37 inch. As regards the mass of the Pop 2, this product measures about 144 grams. When trying to get a build of the Pop 2, you can get it in either champagne gold or black.
The Tecno Pop 2 comes with a 5.50-inch display which is not so impressive. The display of this phone is not the TFT display usually found in low-end devices. Rather than being a TFT display, the display is an in-plane (IPS) liquid crystal display (LCD). This display has got support for over 16 million colours, while leaving the phone with a screen-to-body ratio of about 66 percent. Furthermore, the display of this phone is claimed to have a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, and this leaves it with a pixel density of about 200 pixels per inch. And yes, the Pop 2 features a scratch-resistant glass.
There is nothing so special about the computing power of the Tecno Pop 2. This smartphone comes with the MediaTek MT6580A as its chipset. Just in case you do not know the MediaTek MT6580A chipset, this item is a quad-core chipset which has got cores that can be clocked at about 1.30 GHz. When not faced with heavy duty tasks, the performance of the MediaTek MT6580A chipset should be far from disappointing. And in terms of power efficiency, there is absolutely nothing to worry about, with an item like the MT6580A.
The graphics-related task of the Tecno Pop 2 are handled by a graphics processing unit known as the Mali-400 MP2. This GPU has been around for a while, and we are yet to find a manufacturer who has considered the GPU a crappy item. In other words, this chip is great at what it was designed to do.
In the aspect of main memory, Tecno treated the phone like a typical low-end smartphone. This is another way of saying that the Tecno Pop 2 comes with a 1 GB RAM. With the kind of OS and apps this device is expected to run, users of the phone should experience no lag.
OS and Storage
The Tecno Pop 2 is powered by a custom version of an Android operating system. This should not come as a surprise, as Tecno has a long history of running custom OS on its smart devices. The custom primary software powering the Pop 2, is based on the Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. And we are not talking about the standard edition of the OS, we are rather talking about the Go edition of the OS. The Go edition of the OS had to be chosen to avoid possible lags, when using the phone.
There is also nothing special about the storage of the Tecno Pop 2. This device comes with an internal storage having a capacity of about 8 GB. Not all of this 8 GB can be used by a user of the phone, as the OS and pre-installed items of the phone, need some space to be stored on. In other words, users of the device are left with about 5 GB of storage space. For any user who would love to have more storage space, a micro SD would be needed. The Pop 2 works with micro SD cards not having more than 32 GB of space.
We have two cameras on the Tecno Pop 2, and we are quite glad with the work the designers did in this aspect. The product has got an 8 MP camera in the front of the smart phone. This camera is pretty enhanced and can be used to take pretty nice pictures. In other words, the phone would make an ideal product for people who are on a low budget, but would prefer an item that could be used for selfies. The rear side of the Pop 2 features a 5 MP camera.
Dual SIM support has now become a standard for smartphones targeted at people in countries like Nigeria. And as a result, the Tecno Pop 2 has got support for two SIM cards. It is however important to note that the phone does not have support for the 4G technology. To enjoy a fast internet access, you might have to use the Wi-Fi feature of the phone. And just in case you would like to use the device as a mobile hotspot, this is very possible with the Pop 2.
We are not so impressed with the battery powering the Tecno Pop 2. This battery is a Li-Ion battery that has got a capacity of about 2,400 mAh. A battery like this would definitely be enough to last a user a day, but we feel Tecno could have a done job in this aspect. We have a good number of other products in the category of this device, which have batteries of more than 3,500 mAh.
