All about the $4 Freedom 251 smartphone

    Freedom $4 Phone

Well well well, I have been seeing this online for quite some time now and have decided to write about it. Hmmm, an Android smartphone worth $100 (20,000 Naira) been sold for just $4 (800 Naira), I’m sure you’re wondering how that is even possible, I am too. Let’s find out.

An Indian company which goes by the name Ringing Bells few weeks back started selling the ‘world’s cheapest’ smartphone called Freedom 251 for 251 rupees which when converted is just 4 dollars, 3 pounds or 800 Naira (Going by Nigeria’s official exchange rate, Lol).

Due to the mindblowing price, there has been a lot of interest in the phone which is what I believe the makers set out to achieve. There was sooo much interest that the website of Ringing Bells crashed in the process (who doesn’t like awoof). Many of the prospective buyers were disappointed due to the fact that they couldn’t buy it due to the crash so its not even clear how many devices were made and sold.

Many analysts world over have been criticizing the phone many of them saying it is no possible way to make a smartphone with just 4 dollars.”

Ringing Bells say that their aim is to “empower citizens, even in the remotest rural and semi-urban centers of India, with the latest in digital technology at incredible affordable prices.” The belief of most people is that the Indian government had a hand in making the phone available so cheaply.

The President of Ringing bells, Ashok Chadha said the phone’s parts are imported from China and cost about 36 dollars per device but believes he will make money through “economies of scale” and tax breaks for manufacturing.

Here’s a summary of Freedom 251’s specs: It sports a 4 inch, 540×960 pixel display and is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor. It has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 32GB through the microSD. The rear camera is 3.2-megapixels and the front camera is 0.3-megapixels.

Ringing Bells Freedom 251 smartphone runs on Android OS Lollipop v5.1 and packs a 1450mAh removable battery.  The phone uses only a single SIM and has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM and a few important sensors.
